This was a heavy week, friend—we feel it, too. There aren’t words that will fix the heartache of what we’re all experiencing, but just know that we’re here with and for you. They can’t break our community, but these stories shook us to our core.
Abortion Advocates Are Forever Targets. Please Understand That.
We send so much love to the Hortman and Hoffman families, Minnesota abortion providers and advocates, and all of those folks fighting to make the world a better place.
It has been days since the capture of Vance Boelter—the armed white man who murdered former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband and tried to kill State Senator John Hoffman and his wife—but the reality of the threat to advocates of abortion access remains.
Melissa Hortman was a tireless fighter for gender equity, abortion access, and racial justice—exactly the kind of woman that enrages violent extremists. This attack was not random, and is not at all new for abortion providers and advocates. For decades, they have consistently experienced threats and harassment from the anti-abortion movement, As you read this, Congress and this administration are fast tracking the removal of THE ONLY FEDERAL PROTECTION abortion providers have against clinic invasions and harassment. The unspeakable act of repealing this act is the 50 billionth warning shot fired that they will not stop until they legislate us out of our humanity and back to chattel status.
She Was a Nurse, a Mother, and a Person… Georgia Saw Only a Womb.
Adriana Smith, a 31-year-old nurse in Georgia, was declared brain dead four months ago, but thanks to the state’s extremist abortion laws, she was kept on mechanical life support solely because she was pregnant. Her own wishes? Irrelevant. Her family’s heartbreak? Secondary. Her humanity? Apparently inconsequential. On Tuesday, her family, grieving for months, was allowed to take her off of life-support.
Adriana deserved better. We honor her life and her family by fighting to ensure that no one is faced with this horrific scenario ever again.
