It’s Abortion Provider Appreciation Day
Our community created Abortion Provider Appreciation Day to honor David Gunn, who, in 1993, was the first abortion doctor to be murdered, shot in the back three times by an anti-abortion extremist as he walked from his car to the door of his clinic. Abortion Provider Appreciation Day was created to honor his memory as a great man, doctor, and father who dedicated his life to providing not only abortion care but OB-GYN care and fertility care. Our hearts are with his family, all who loved him, and the patients he so compassionately served.
To date, 11 abortion providers have been killed for doing this work—at their clinics, in their homes, and even while ushering at church—so we have expanded this remembrance from one day to an entire week to honor those who have given their lives to provide healthcare, and those who continue to provide care despite the risk.
Abortion AF doesn’t need a day or a week to show up for abortion providers. Every day we provide support in big and small ways. We tackle big projects like gardening or renovating a clinic lobby, to more personal support like personalized self-care packages or an intimate meal with staff. Bringing clinics together with their community with heart-to-heart acts of kindness creates a sense of belonging for the clinics and a true sense of making a difference for our staff and volunteers.
